Apollo 10 Earth Landmarks Photos (from Apollo “Earth Landmarks Maps & Photos” Book)
This is a vintage NASA-produced copy of the Earth Landmarks photo section of the Apollo 10 “Earth Landmark Maps & Photos” book. It consists of 61 photos on 31 pages, each printed on lightweight three-hole-punched 8.5” x 10.5” paper, and each with a plastic-coated tab.
All photos are notated with landmark and North compass point, with a chart printed beneath giving latitude, longitude, elevation, and horizontal uncertainty calculations for each identified location.
Official NASA identification numbers at the bottom of each page indicate that all photos were taken during Gemini earth-orbit missions between 1965 and 1966. These photos (as well as the accompanying maps) were printed by the Army Map Service in very limited quantities and were used exclusively for crew training and actual missions. Extremely fine condition.
During the Apollo missions, each flight carried an “Earth Landmark Maps & Photos” book containing 200+ earth terrain photos and earth landmark maps, bound together with three binder rings between cardstock covers. Only two copies of an Apollo-era “Earth Landmark Maps and Photos” book have appeared at auction: A flown Apollo 10 copy from the personal collection of CMP John Young (part number SKB32100079-320, serial number 1001) and an unflown training-used copy of the same book, also from Young, with no part or serial number. This copy is identical to the one used on Apollo 10 and appears to be an “extra” that was printed for this mission but never used.
Note that the Apollo 10 “cover sheet” is a new photocopy of the flown Apollo 10 copy. It was added for aesthetic and contextual reasons only and is not vintage. The binder is also contemporary, and each page is stored in an archival sleeve for protection. When purchased, the only "cover" was a light pink sheet of paper!
A great chance to own a rare and desirable Apollo-era Flight Data File! Extremely fine condition, and rarely encountered!
