This Apollo star chart (Southern Hemisphere) comes from the personal collection of Walt Cunningham, and was used in astronavigation training during preparation for Apollo 7.
Cunningham's COA for the star chart reads, in part: "The Apollo Star Charts shown above come from my personal collection and were used in astronavigation training during preparation for Apollo 7. I used them along with many other star charts and devices, to familiarize myself with the navigational stars used by the Apollo guidance and navigation system... These items have remained continuously in my personal collection since the Apollo program..." (Note: the original COA was issued to certify two charts—Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Southern Hemisphere chart is being sold separately, and is accompanied by a COPY of Cunningham's original COA, which certified both charts in a single letter).
The chart is printed on Chronopaque (a special flight-approved film developed by DuPont Corporation that met NASA's stringent fire and outgassing specifications), and shows a Southern polar projection of the constellations, stars, and planets. Star charts such as this one were produced in very limited quantities and were used exclusively for crew training, mission planning, and flight operations.
Included is a copy of Cunningham's hand-signed COA for this item, as well as an original signed COA from Don Willis of Lunar Legacies (who sold this on behalf of Walt Cunningham). Both letters include full provenance information for the item, describing its use history and attesting that the star chart is a training-used article originating from Walt Cunningham's personal collection.
