Apollo 8 Commemorative Parchment, Signed

A 5" x 8.75" reproduction on vellum of the Christmas Day, 1968, New York Times front page (featuring the headline "3 Men Fly Around the Moon / Only 70 Miles from Surface / Fire Rocket, Head for Earth").  A 6¢ Apollo 8 “Earthrise” stamp (Scott #1371) has been affixed in the wide lower border and has received a First Day of Issue cancellation, May 5, 1969, at Houston, Texas.

The three crewmembers of this historic flight have all signed: "James Lovell", "Anders", and "Frank Borman.” The Borman and Anders signatures are both genuine, but the "Lovell" is an autopen example.

Ken Havekotte has identified this particular Lovell autopen signature as a fairly rare variant (not listed in the online catalogs)—and one that would fool many collectors.  As such, even though Lovell’s signature is not genuine, it is an important autopen reference signature (and one that should be included in the “catalog” of variants).  Most examples of this document that have come to market are signed in the same manner (Borman and Anders genuine, Lovell autopen).  Very fine condition.

Although these are often described as “parchments,” these documents are actually printed on vellum, which is much finer.
