Console-Used Shuttle Manual (1988-1993), Ex. Flight Director Don Puddy (“Crimson Flight”)
Massive INCO Console manual (Volume I) from Shuttle, with updates spanning from 1988 through 1993. INCO stands for “Instrumentation & Communications Officer” (INCO), one of the new Flight Director positions on Shuttle.
The INCO was responsible for all data, voice and video communications systems, including monitoring the configuration of in-flight communications and instrumentation systems. Duties also included monitoring the telemetry link between the vehicle and the ground and overseeing the uplink command and control processes. The position was formed from the combination of Apollo’s LEM and CSM communicator positions.
Based on the dates of the various update pages, this manual would have been used (at a minimum) from STS-26R through STS-61.
This manual is in extremely good condition, with all 350+ pages present and in great shape. Has several post-it tabs marking out certain pages, as well as one page with annotations. Also includes a number of tri-fold schematics. Very rare to find an actual console-used Shuttle INCO manual. Binder is original and bears the inscription “Comm Officer / Comm Console Handbook” on the spine.
This item comes from the collection of Flight Director Don Puddy (“Crimson Flight”), and was purchased along with a number of his Shuttle-era Flight Data Files and Schematics.
