SpaceX Crew Dragon SES-10 Grid Fin Presentation—Limited edition, employee-only SpaceX SES-10 flown grid fin presentation presentation (No. 445 of 450, Version 1), commemorating the world’s first reflight of a commercial orbital-class booster.
Falcon 9 booster B1021 was the first-ever SpaceX Orbital Class booster to be refurbished and re-flown. It was first launched on 8 April 2016 carrying a Dragon spacecraft and BEAM on the SpX CRS-8 mission, successfully landing on an autonomous spaceport drone ship (ASDS). After recovery, inspections and refurbishing, it was launched again on 30 March 2017 for the SES-10 mission and recovered successfully a second time. With this first relaunch of a flight-proven rocket, the age of truly reusable launch vehicles had finally arrived—and with it, a new era in spaceflight.
This is perhaps the most coveted SpaceX presentation released to date, featuring an impressively large piece of flight hardware from one of their most significant flights. The SES-10 mission was the first time a flight-proven (previously flown) Falcon 9 rocket first stage was reflown—a technological milestone for both SpaceX and commercial spaceflight in general.
The large artifact on this presentation is a highly desirable outer cut from one of B1021's hypersonic aluminum grid fins. This example is particularly nice in that is shows extensive burning and thermal alteration of the Portuguese cork ablative covering, as well as the aluminum substructure. The cut section is mounted in a X orientation, in honor of SpaceX.
SpaceX presentations of flown material are not available to the public; they are given to SpaceX employees who played key roles in the missions, or who make a significant monetary contribution to SpaceX’s PAC donation matching program. As a result, these items are very difficult to source, and few have made their way onto the secondary market. And here's your chance to own one!
This example was obtained from a former SpaceX propulsion technician.
